Kettal Il Colonnato is a set of dining tables by Mario Bellini, dated 2022, in which the top rests on a ring of slim columns. The tops are square, round or rectangular, in teak, Minera stone or marble. Few pieces of luxury outdoor furniture take their idea so directly from a building.

a portico for the table
Bellini looked at the colonnade, the row of columns that holds up a portico in classical architecture, and put a tabletop where the roof would be. From most angles the columns overlap and the base reads as a solid drum. Step to the side and they separate, and the space under the top seems to empty out. The table changes as guests walk around it.
The design began in marble only. Kettal added teak and Minera stone for a more contemporary version, so each of the three shapes now comes in three materials, nine tables in all. Square and round tops stand on four or five columns. The rectangular tops stand on six or eight, which keeps the rhythm even along a long side.
Each material behaves differently outdoors. Teak turns silver gray if it is left unoiled and returns to honey with a sanding and a coat of oil. Marble is a natural stone, so it can etch under lemon juice or wine and is best sealed and wiped after meals. Minera stone gives a mineral top with a quieter surface than veined marble, and it asks for the same simple care.
